ALLERGIES & DERMATOLOGY IN CHINESE MEDICINE
Inflammatory responses that commonly generate allergic reactions and skin disorders are often understood as manifestations of physiological wei (defensive qi) or as pathological wind and/or heat. These conditions may also involve complications affecting the physiological ying (nutritive qi), xue (blood), and jin-ye (body fluids), as well as pathological dampness, dryness, and/or phlegm. Over time, such imbalances can significantly tax the postnatal qi, leading to chronic conditions or autoimmune presentations.
In addition, improper or inadequate treatment may cause these conditions to become dormant, only to re-emerge as seasonal or periodic flare-ups. Therefore, a crucial focus in Chinese medicine—especially within the specialty of wai ke (external medicine), which includes the subspecialty of pi fu ke (dermatology)—is identifying the root causes of these exogenous, branch-level manifestations affecting the skin and sensory orifices.
With an emphasis on wei (defensive qi), this specialty examines the role of jin (thin fluids) and yang qi in the aspects of qi related to communication, transformation, and exchange with ying (nutritive qi), as well as their relationship to digestion, emotional stress, and lifestyle factors. Furthermore, as wei qi is an aspect of zheng qi (upright qi, or immunity), clinicians can better understand how to modulate immune function and inflammatory pathways through these protective mechanisms.
Allergies may be viewed as a form of du (toxicity or poisoning), arising from external allergens, internal self-reactivity, or situational triggers resulting from a combination of factors. Understanding these distinct “pathways” allows clinicians to adopt a more holistic approach to treating a wide range of dermatological conditions, including hives, dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, alopecia, and scleroderma.
Successful treatment often involves the combined use of both topical and internal therapies. This course draws from the classical medical texts, the traditions of wai ke and pi fu ke, and the clinical insights of historical practitioners.

Attendees must further agree that all rights, including all intellectual property rights, to such recordings (and to all derivative works of such recordings in whatever form), shall belong exclusively to AUCM. Attendees will not be compensated in any way for providing the above permission or for releasing any rights to recordings; rather it is a precondition to attend the seminars.
***For Livestream Participants: While we are taking reasonable precautions to keep the live stream video up and running (including redundant connections, computers, etc.) there is always a possibility of technical failure. In the event of a technical failure, any parts that are not streamed properly will be made available to the live stream participants as soon as we are able to get the recorded video uploaded to Vimeo within a months time. If they are small areas that are not demonstrations, we may upload audio only so we can get it up quickly. Due to the additional expenses we have in offering this, we are unable to offer any refunds based on technical problems. However those signed up as live stream participants will be able to view any missed video online. We do not have plans to offer this series for CEU"s online at the moment, therefore, live stream may be the only way to participate remotely in these classes.
