Inflammatory responses that commonly generate allergic reactions and skin disorders are often understood as manifestations of physiological wei (defensive qi) or as pathological wind and/or heat. These conditions may also involve complications affecting the physiological ying (nutritive qi), xue (blood), and jin-ye (body fluids), as well as pathological dampness, dryness, and/or phlegm. Over time, such imbalances can significantly tax the postnatal qi, leading to chronic conditions or autoimmune presentations.
In addition, improper or inadequate treatment may cause these conditions to become dormant, only to re-emerge as seasonal or periodic flare-ups.
