Inflammatory responses that commonly generate allergic reactions and skin disorders are often understood as manifestations of physiological wei (defensive qi) or as pathological wind and/or heat. These conditions may also involve complications affecting the physiological ying (nutritive qi), xue (blood), and jin-ye (body fluids), as well as pathological dampness, dryness, and/or phlegm. Over time, such imbalances can significantly tax the postnatal qi, leading to chronic conditions or autoimmune presentations.
In addition, improper or inadequate treatment may cause these conditions to become dormant, only to re-emerge as seasonal or periodic flare-ups. Therefore, a crucial focus in Chinese medicine—especially within the specialty of wai ke (external medicine), which includes the subspecialty of pi fu ke (dermatology)—is identifying the root causes of these exogenous, branch-level manifestations affecting the skin and sensory orifices.
