Epigenetics and Constitutional Healing - Gene Expression & Classical Chinese Medicine (Part II)
Can Destiny Be Changed?
In Part I, Jeffrey Yuen explored the Chinese medical investigation into the transformation of destiny, a subject that gained prominence during the Song Dynasty when the Neo-Confucian philosopher Zhu Xi proposed that destiny is not rigidly predetermined, but can be influenced through conscious cultivation and the fulfillment of one’s highest potential.
Examining the four facets of genetics through the lens of Jing-essence, gene information (Kidneys), gene expression (Bladder), gene modulation (San Jiao), and adaptability/mutation (Gall Bladder)—participants were introduced to acupuncture strategies based on epigenetic influences arising from lifestyle, environment, and consciousness. These approaches offered practical methods for influencing constitutional expression and modifying the trajectory of one’s destiny.
But can medicine directly influence the expression of one’s inherited constitution?
Central to this inquiry is the Jing-essence, which governs birth, development, maturation, aging, and decline. During the Song Dynasty, the Eight Extraordinary Vessels became a primary focus of clinical investigation as physicians sought methods for accessing the deepest constitutional levels of the body. Through their study, important insights emerged regarding the treatment of constitutional predispositions, inherited temperaments, familial diseases, and the effects of postnatal and epigenetic stressors.
Further exploration of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels revealed a deeper understanding of the Jing Bie (Divergent Channels), which serve as pathways through which physiological and pathological influences can penetrate the constitutional level. These influences may become the seeds of adaptation, natural selection, or inherited disease, affecting the expression and integrity of genetic potential.
In Part II, the exploration continues through the clinical application of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels, Divergent Channels, specific herbs, stones and minerals, aromatics, and internal alchemical cultivation practices. As modern science continues to uncover the mechanisms of gene expression and epigenetics, this course examines the fascinating parallels found within Classical Chinese Medicine and its understanding of constitutional transformation.
Special attention will be given to clinical strategies for addressing deep constitutional patterns associated with autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalances, immune dysregulation, inflammatory conditions, and other chronic health challenges.
By revisiting these classical teachings, practitioners will gain a deeper understanding of how Chinese medicine approaches the constitutional level of physiology and how clinicians can assist patients in cultivating greater health, vitality, resilience, and conscious participation in the unfolding of their destiny.
Please Note: Attendance in Part I is not required to participate in this course. While Part II stands on its own and offers valuable clinical insights and applications, participants who attend both seminars will gain a richer and more complete understanding of the relationship between Jing, gene expression, epigenetics, the Eight Extraordinary Vessels, and constitutional transformation within Classical Chinese Medicine.
